Cycling as a spectator sport will be showcased at this year’s Bestmed Tshwane Classic following the announcement that a kermesse has been added to the day’s entertainment activities at the Voortrekker Monument on 3 November.

The kermesse, a circuit-based race, is by invitation only and will host the country’s top professionals. The kermesse features a secure 1.1km circuit on a smooth road surface inside the grounds of the Monument.

“We are creating as many activities as possible to entertain visitors and cyclists,” said race organiser Mauritz Meyer.

“There is ample spectator space on the kermesse course, and it will be completely closed to traffic. Spectators will feel the exhilaration as the pros come speeding past on them numerous occasions.”

According to Meyer, the Monument is opening its trails for the day and visitors waiting for their loved ones are welcome to take a walk or go for a jog on the beautifully sculpted trails.

“The Monument is setting up a delightful race village with the Blikkantien Restaurant and Avocado Deli increasing their capacity on the day to ensure cyclists get enough to eat and drink.

“A big beer garden also forms part of the picture this year. The beer garden will be set up on the platform overlooking the city next to the Blikkantien.”

According to Meyer, special provision is made for cycling clubs who can set up their gazebos on a dedicated shaded area adjacent to the kermesse finish line. “This will create a wonderful stage for the pros to fight it out on the circuit,” he said.

Riders can book for the very popular Voortrekker Restaurant buffet lunch this year. The Voortrekker Restaurant served as last year’s prize giving venue, but with the move of the race village up to the Monument itself, the restaurant can this year offer its signature buffet lunch.

Bookings are essential and these riders are advised to park at the Voortrekker Restaurant grassed parking on the Northern side of the Monument on the morning before their ride.

In addition to the kermesse, another very important race also takes place at the Monument with kids lining up from 09h00 to do their bit.

For history buffs there is a unique offering with riders having the option to book a visit to the Monument itself for up to five family members at a 50% discounted rate when they enter on-line.

As a special treat, historian and former politician Dr Pieter Mulder will be on hand to provide his unique insights into the Monument for visitors on the day.

“All of these initiatives enable families to spend some time inside the Monument while they wait for their loved ones to finish the race. We’ll make it well worth the visit!”
